A letter from...
Hello? Kate Sheppard here. Thank you very much indeed for continuing our conversation.
I suppose you heard what we did? We got the vote for women. The first in the world, as well, and I’m quite proud of that, obviously. It was quite a fight. It probably seems like nothing now, but can you imagine the whole world had one way of doing something and then from this tiny outpost of the Empire we turned that all on its head!
We were determined and we were organised. We worked together, which is why I’m not alone in this monument. Quite a few men were on our side too, I might add.
Just Imagine Christchurch in those days - it was quite radical despite its conservatism. I mean, women were riding bicycles and wearing trousers and becoming vegetarian. It was really something.
But we missed something big. And that’s what I really need to speak to you about.
I suppose you might like to hear more about how we managed to achieve the unthinkable - and get women the right to vote. But also why we thought it was so important.
We had a few blind spots as well - which were reflective of our times. But you live in different times - and I’d love to do a little experiment with you if you’re up for it. What if we apply our logic and thinking to the context of your time. Bear with me - I’m so excited to give it a try.
But first, why don’t you travel with me back in time. It’s xx and I’ve just had one of those mind-blowing experiences that sets your life on a new course. You know the type of thing I mean - you walk into a room as one person and walk out as another.
